Why Monaco works for an Instagram session
Monaco is two square kilometres, which sounds limiting until you realise the backdrops stack vertically. In one hour you can shoot Casino Square with the supercars parked in front of it, take a lift up to the Rock for the whole harbour behind you, and finish in the old town lanes where the walls are ochre and the streets are quiet.
It is also the most photogenic place on the coast to show status without saying anything, which is exactly what most content sessions here are for. The trick is knowing where security tolerates a camera and where it does not, and that is local knowledge more than photography.

How a content session with friends actually runs
Nobody in your group needs to know how to pose. We meet at the first spot, walk, talk and shoot as we go, and the direction is limited to where to stand and where to look. Most of the frames people keep are the ones between the poses, so we shoot through the walking and the laughing rather than stopping for it.
One hour covers three backdrops and two outfits comfortably. Two hours gets you a fourth spot, a swimsuit change and the time to slow down. Everyone in the group is photographed alone as well as together, which is the part people underestimate: a girls trip gallery where each person also has ten strong solo frames is worth far more to the group than the same number of group shots.

Practical things to know in Monaco
Monaco is a sovereign principality with its own rules, and they matter more here than anywhere else on the coast. A photographer working handheld in public spaces is fine, and that is how we shoot. Tripods, lighting rigs and anything that looks like a production need prior authorisation, and Casino Square is watched closely. The Casino interior cannot be photographed.
Drones are effectively prohibited across the Principality. If you have seen aerial Monaco content, it was either shot with a permit for a broadcast production or shot illegally. We shoot elevated frames from the Rock and from the public viewpoints instead, which is where the harbour looks best anyway.
Frequently asked questions
Is Monaco small enough to cover several spots in one session?
Yes, and that is its advantage. The Principality is two square kilometres and the public lifts connect the levels, so one hour genuinely covers Casino Square, the Rock viewpoint over Port Hercule and the lanes of Monaco-Ville without a car. Larvotto adds a fourth look if you have two hours.
Can we photograph in front of the Casino de Monte-Carlo?
Yes, outside on the square, working handheld and without blocking the entrance or the traffic. The square is public and photography there is normal. Tripods, lighting and anything that looks like a commercial production need authorisation, and the Casino interior is off limits to cameras. Early morning is the calmest window.
Can we get the harbour and the yachts in the photos?
Yes, and it is the frame worth planning for. The Rock viewpoint puts the whole of Port Hercule and the towers behind you, and the elevated public terraces around the port give the same view from lower down. Blue hour, the twenty minutes after sunset, is when the harbour lights come on and Monaco looks like nowhere else.
What is the best time of day to shoot in Monaco?
Sunrise for the Rock and the harbour, because the water is still and the light comes in low from the east. Late afternoon for Larvotto and Casino Square. Blue hour, the twenty minutes after sunset, is the one hour where Monaco looks like nowhere else, and it is the frame most visitors miss because they are at dinner.
