Why Cannes works for an Instagram session
Cannes is the easiest town on the coast to photograph without a plan, which is exactly why it rewards having one. La Croisette runs flat and straight for two kilometres with palms, blue parasols and the bay behind you, so the light is predictable and the backdrops repeat. That means we can shoot fast and keep the session feeling like a walk.
Then there is the second Cannes, the one above the port. Le Suquet is a hill of narrow stairs, painted shutters and washing lines, five minutes from the palms and a completely different world. Doing both in one session is what makes a Cannes gallery look like it took a day.

How a content session with friends actually runs
Nobody in your group needs to know how to pose. We meet at the first spot, walk, talk and shoot as we go, and the direction is limited to where to stand and where to look. Most of the frames people keep are the ones between the poses, so we shoot through the walking and the laughing rather than stopping for it.
One hour covers three backdrops and two outfits comfortably. Two hours gets you a fourth spot, a swimsuit change and the time to slow down. Everyone in the group is photographed alone as well as together, which is the part people underestimate: a girls trip gallery where each person also has ten strong solo frames is worth far more to the group than the same number of group shots.

Practical things to know in Cannes
La Croisette, the red steps and the old town are all public. A small handheld session needs no permit. Private beach clubs along the Croisette are another matter, they are private concessions, so we ask before shooting on their deck.
The one date to plan around is the Film Festival, usually the second half of May, when the Palais and part of the Croisette are fenced off, access is controlled and the whole town is at capacity. Where can we shoot in Cannes without the crowd?
Le Suquet, the old town above the port. Five minutes from the Croisette, it is a hill of narrow stairs and painted shutters where almost nobody photographs, and it holds warm shade in the late afternoon. Plage du Midi, west of the port, is the other quiet option, with the whole town in the background and a fraction of the people.
Can we take photos on the red steps of the Palais?
Yes, outside festival dates. The steps are a public space and photographing there is free, you simply share them with other visitors doing the same thing, so we work quickly and pick an hour when the square is calmer. During the Film Festival in May the area is fenced and access is restricted to accredited guests.
What is the best time of day to shoot in Cannes?
The two hours before sunset for the Croisette, because the light comes down the bay and the palms stop casting hard shadows. Le Suquet works from late afternoon, when the hill sits in warm shade. In July and August, an 8am start is the other good answer: the Croisette is empty, and you are done before breakfast.
Can we include the Lérins islands in the session?
Yes, on the half-day format. The boat from the old port to Sainte-Marguerite takes about twenty minutes each way, and the island gives you pines, clear water and no buildings, which is the strongest contrast to the Croisette on this stretch of coast. Allow four hours in total, boat included.
