In short
Reddit mostly says Saint-Tropez is too far for a day trip from Nice, and that holds: the 2026 Trans Côte d'Azur boat takes 2 h 30 each way (€84 return) for five hours ashore. From Cannes it is 1 h 15 (€71). There is no train station; ZOU! bus 876 runs from Saint-Raphaël. Avoid driving in July and August.
Ask Reddit whether Saint-Tropez works as a day trip from Nice or Cannes and the answer comes back fast, and mostly negative. We read the recent threads and checked every timetable and fare they mention against the operators' 2026 pages. One detail matters more than any other: where you start from.
Is a Saint-Tropez day trip from Nice or Cannes worth it, according to Reddit?
From Nice, the Reddit consensus is no, or only just. From Cannes, which the threads discuss less, the timetables make it a reasonable day. In an August 2026 thread in r/nicefrance about a last free day on the Riviera, one commenter put it simply: “Tropez is too far for a day trip.” Another wrote: “The ferry is too long for a day trip and it’s crowded. It’s not worth it.” The thread settled on Villefranche instead. In r/FranceTravel in April 2026, a reply to someone planning the trip opened with a blunter question about the reason for going, arguing the glamour is mostly for people with houses there.
The pattern repeats across r/travel. A 2024 reply calls it a full day trip from Nice and suggests Cannes or Antibes to save time, and in a June 2026 thread a commenter notes that Saint-Tropez is pretty far from the Cannes to Menton strip. Not everyone agrees on the place itself: in a January 2026 thread weighing it against the Gorges du Verdon, two replies called it overhyped, and one answered, “Other comments say Saint Tropez is overhyped but I didn’t think so.”
Our view is narrower. The village is small and at its best early and late, which is exactly when a day-tripper cannot be there. For the harbour, the old lanes, the Citadelle and lunch, five hours ashore is enough. If you want Pampelonne, the villages and the evening light, stay a night. Our guide to the top 10 things to do in Saint-Tropez will tell you which of the two trips you are planning.
What is the best way to get from Nice or Cannes to Saint-Tropez?
In season, the boat. It drops you in the harbour with no parking or traffic, and from Cannes it is quick. Out of season, or on a day the boat does not sail, it is the train to Saint-Raphaël and the ZOU! bus, or a car.

How does the ferry from Nice or Cannes work in 2026?
It is a day cruise on a fixed schedule. Trans Côte d'Azur leaves Nice at 09:00 and Cannes at 10:15, both arrive at 11:30 at the Quai de l'Estacade, and both leave Saint-Tropez at 16:30. That gives you five hours ashore. Return fares in 2026 are €84 for adults from Nice and €71 from Cannes, the return has to be the same day, and booking is required.

| Departure | Leaves | Time in Saint-Tropez | Back at | Adult return |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nice, Quai Lunel | 09:00 | 11:30 to 16:30 | 19:00 | €84 |
| Cannes, Quai Saint-Pierre | 10:15 | 11:30 to 16:30 | 17:45 | €71 |
Sailing days in 2026: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 12 May to 30 June; every day in July and August (except Mondays from Nice); Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday in September; Tuesday and Saturday from 1 to 20 October. Extra sailings for the Grande Braderie on 23, 24 and 25 October 2026.

Two Reddit details need correcting. The r/nicefrance thread puts the crossing at around three hours one way; the 2026 timetable says 2 hours 30 from Nice. And in the r/FranceTravel thread, a traveller could not find a Cannes boat on 13 May 2026: that was a Wednesday, and in May the boat only sails on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
Can you get to Saint-Tropez by train?
Not all the way: there is no railway station in Saint-Tropez. The town's own transport page lists Saint-Raphaël, Les Arcs and Toulon as the nearest stations, and a detailed reply in the r/FranceTravel thread says the same, suggesting a bus or taxi for the last leg. That leg is ZOU! line 876, Saint-Raphaël to Saint-Tropez via Sainte-Maxime. On the timetable valid from 1 September to 25 October 2026 it runs every day, takes between 1 hour 15 and 2 hours depending on the departure, and the last bus leaves Saint-Tropez at 20:45. A single ticket costs €2.20, or €0.40 more bought on board.
In a 2023 r/travel thread on the Riviera without a car, one traveller who stayed in Nice wrote “No car necessary unless maybe you want to see St Tropez for the day”. Another, in a 2025 r/travel thread, warned that Saint-Tropez is “over 3 hours by train” from Nice; with a bus leg of 1 hour 15 to 2 hours after the train, that is a realistic estimate. The bus is cheap and it works, but it leaves you only five or six hours in the village. From Saint-Raphaël there is also a boat: Les Bateaux Bleus sail to Saint-Tropez daily from 4 April to 31 October 2026, and warn that summer congestion in the ports can cause delays.
Should you drive from Nice or Cannes to Saint-Tropez?
Only outside July and August, or with a very early start. Nice airport is 91 km from Saint-Tropez, according to the town. In the r/FranceTravel thread, a commenter noted that Google showed 90 minutes from Nice but expected closer to two hours in practice, and up to three on a holiday weekend. The Tourism Office backs this up: it describes dense traffic and car parks that fill fast in summer, and advises arriving before 8:30.
A French commenter in r/nicefrance had a useful tip: leave the motorway and take the coast road between Mandelieu and Saint-Raphaël, a scenic alternative if you have the time. In Saint-Tropez, the Parking du Nouveau Port has 1,400 spaces; its 2026 high-season rates are €4.50 for an hour, €16.20 for six hours and €20.70 for eight. A good alternative in summer is to park in Sainte-Maxime and cross on Les Bateaux Verts: 20 minutes, €9.20 one way or €16.30 return, with boats every 15 minutes in July and August.
What can you do in Saint-Tropez in one day?
With five hours ashore, keep it on foot. Walk the Quai Jean-Jaurès and the lanes of La Ponche, climb to the Citadelle for the view over the gulf (€5, open 10:00 to 18:30 from April to September, 17:30 in October), and give the Musée de l'Annonciade an hour in the heat of the day. If your boat lands on a Tuesday or Saturday, the Place des Lices market runs until 13:00. The electric town shuttle, Le Saint-Tropez Bus, costs €0.50 a ride from the Place des Lices, Monday to Saturday. The full list, with hours and prices, is in our guide to things to do in Saint-Tropez.
What do Reddit threads tell you to avoid?
The same points come up repeatedly: the distance from Nice, summer traffic, and a suspicion that the place is overhyped. One r/nicefrance commenter dismissed both Cannes and Saint-Tropez as offering little beyond high-end retail and expensive restaurants. Fair if you only walk the port, less so for the village behind it.
What Reddit says vs what we'd add (2026)
| What Reddit says | What we'd add |
|---|---|
| Saint-Tropez is too far for a day trip from Nice | From Nice, often true. From Cannes the boat takes 1 h 15, which changes the maths. |
| The ferry is about three hours each way | The 2026 timetable gives 2 h 30 from Nice and 1 h 15 from Cannes. |
| There is no train station in Saint-Tropez | Correct. The town lists Saint-Raphaël, Les Arcs and Toulon; ZOU! line 876 does the last leg from Saint-Raphaël. |
| Google says 90 minutes by car, plan for two or three | Consistent with the Tourism Office, which warns of dense summer traffic and advises arriving before 8:30. |
| There are smaller ferries earlier in the season | Les Bateaux Verts sail from Sainte-Maxime most of the year (20 minutes, €9.20), but that does not help from Nice or Cannes. |
