In short
The most beautiful places near Saint-Tropez are Port Grimaud, the canal town built from 1966 by François Spoerry, 25 minutes by boat from the harbour; the hilltop villages of Gassin and Ramatuelle with the Moulin de Paillas; Grimaud's castle ruins; Cogolin; the walk to Fort-Freinet; and the vineyards of Saint-Maur, Minuty and La Croix. Late afternoon is the best light almost everywhere.
Saint-Tropez is the star, but the gulf around it is full of places that photograph just as well and see a fraction of the crowd: a lagoon town of canals and pastel houses, hilltop villages with the whole bay below, medieval castle ruins, vineyards with chapels in the vines. All of them sit around the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, a short drive from the harbour or a boat ride across the water. Here are the places we use when clients want something other than the port.

Port Grimaud, the Provençal Venice
A lagoon town built from 1966 by the architect François Spoerry on former marshland, designed so that every house has its own access to the water. Its canals, pastel facades with painted shutters, small bridges and moored boats make it one of the most photogenic places on the coast, and it carries the official label of remarkable contemporary architecture. The most photographed spot is the bridge between the Place des Artisans and the Place du Marché. Climb the tower of the church of Saint-François-d'Assise, 78 steps for €1, for a view over the canals and the bay; inside, the stained glass is by Vasarely. A 20-minute water-bus tours the canals from early April to late October, €6 for adults, and self-drive electric boats cost €30 for 30 minutes.
Port Grimaud is free to enter. In 2026 the main car park charges €3.90 for an hour in spring and autumn and €4.20 in July and August, with the first half-hour free outside summer. Better still, arrive by sea: Les Bateaux Verts link Port Grimaud and Saint-Tropez in 25 to 30 minutes from April, from €8.70 one way. The houses are private homes: we shoot from the public quays and bridges, never on private moorings.
Gassin, the balcony over the gulf
Perched at 200 metres and listed among the Plus Beaux Villages de France, Gassin has the view the whole peninsula is arranged around: from the orientation table on Place Léon Martel, it runs from the Bay of Cannes to the Îles d'Hyères and the Alps, while the Place deï Barri looks over the bays of Cavalaire and Pampelonne. In between, stone lanes, a Saracen gate and the Androuno, billed as the narrowest street in the world. Free guided visits run on Mondays from April to October. Late afternoon is the moment, when the light rakes across the vineyards below.
Ramatuelle and the Moulin de Paillas
Ramatuelle winds around its hill in a spiral of lanes, stairs and stepped calades under jasmine and bougainvillea, with a church whose bell tower was once a fourteenth-century watchtower. Above it, the Moulin de Paillas stands at 325 metres, restored in 2002, with a sweeping view over Pampelonne and the gulf; volunteers open it for free guided visits on weekend mornings from 4 April to 1 November 2026. The village market is held on Thursdays and Sundays on the Place de l'Ormeau.
Grimaud, Cogolin and La Garde-Freinet
Three inland villages for clients who want the Provence of stone rather than sea. Grimaud is crowned by the ruins of a castle mentioned as early as 1058, a listed historic monument, free and open all year: at golden hour the walls glow and the gulf shines below. Cogolin hides vaulted passages and porches in dark stone and a clock tower from the late thirteenth century, best in the soft morning light. Above La Garde-Freinet, a walk of about 3 km on the blue-marked route leads to the Croix and the ruins of Fort-Freinet, cut into the rock, with views over the Maures and the gulf; it is steep, not for rain or strong wind, and subject to the summer fire-risk closures.
The vineyards
The gulf is rosé country, and its estates are some of its most elegant settings. Château Saint-Maur, a Cru Classé in Cogolin, has a late nineteenth-century building in a style evoking Moorish Spain and is open daily from Easter to the end of September. Château Minuty in Gassin has a chapel from 1865 in the middle of its vines. Domaine de la Croix, founded in 1882 at La Croix-Valmer, opens its cellar and shop every day. A tasting visit is open to all; a photoshoot is a different matter, and we always agree it with the estate beforehand.
How do you combine these places in one session?
Pick one village and one setting nearby rather than trying to see the whole gulf. Our favourite combinations: Port Grimaud's canals in the late afternoon, then the boat back to Saint-Tropez for the harbour at dusk; Gassin's lanes, then the Moulin de Paillas for the view; or a morning in the coves of Ramatuelle followed by lunch in a vineyard. Two hours cover two places comfortably.
