Christmas on the French Riviera 2026: markets, light and a winter photo session

The three Christmas villages with their 2026 dates and hours, what the week really feels like on the coast, a three-day plan, and the one hour of the day worth photographing.

In short

Christmas on the French Riviera in 2026 runs around three villages: Nice from 25 November to 3 January, Cannes from 27 November to 3 January with an ice rink, and Monaco at Port Hercule from 4 December to 3 January. Days are mild and short, with sunset just before 5 pm. The best hour for photographs is the last one before dusk.

You are spending Christmas week on the coast, somewhere between Nice and Monaco, and you want to know what will actually be open, how the days feel in December, and whether it is worth planning a photo session with the family. Here is the honest version for 2026, with every date checked in November 2026.

Which Christmas villages are open on the French Riviera in 2026?

Three villages matter: Nice from 25 November, Cannes from 27 November with an ice rink, and Monaco at Port Hercule from 4 December, all running until 3 January 2027. Entry to all three is free. You pay only for food, rides and the rinks.

Nice is the one to walk through in the morning, with the Promenade des Anglais two minutes away. Cannes is the one for an evening with children, because of the rink. Monaco is the one to see at dusk, when the lights come on over the yachts of Port Hercule.

What does Christmas week feel like on the coast?

Quiet, mild and short. The sun sets before 5 pm all month, so the afternoon is over early and the evenings belong to the villages. The beaches are empty, the sea is still blue, and the terraces that stay open serve lunch in the sun.

Plan the outdoor part of each day between late morning and 4 pm. The light stays low all afternoon in December, which is exactly what you want for pictures, and the wind off the sea is the only thing to dress for. Our guide to the French Riviera in winter covers what is open and what is not, town by town.

How do you plan three days between Nice, Cannes and Monaco?

One town a day, with the village at the end of the afternoon rather than the start. The three are 30 to 40 minutes apart by train, and the TER coastal line runs late into the evening.

If you only have one evening, take Monaco. The village sits right on the water, with the yachts and the Rock behind the lights, and it is the only one of the three that looks as good from across the harbour as it does from inside. Our best photo spots in Monaco guide lists the viewpoints above the port.

Is Christmas a good time for a photo session on the Riviera?

Yes, and it is one of the easiest weeks of the year to photograph: low sun from midday onwards, empty beaches, and a coast that still looks like summer in the pictures. The one rule is to finish before 5 pm, because the light goes quickly once the sun is behind the hills.

Riva Photography is a private photography agency that works only on the most exclusive stretch of this coast, with a small circle of high-end photographers. A Christmas session usually runs like this.

Good places in December are the Promenade des Anglais and the Cours Saleya in Nice, the Croisette and the old port in Cannes, and the harbour walk below the Rock in Monaco, which leads straight into the Christmas Village for the last frames at dusk. What happens on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve?

The villages stay open, with shorter hours on 24 December and a late night on 31 December. In Monaco, the Christmas Village runs from 11 am to 7.30 pm on Christmas Eve, then from 11 am to 2.30 am on New Year's Eve.

Restaurants on the coast serve a set Christmas Eve menu, and most want a booking by early December. Hotels usually publish their 24 and 31 December menus in November. Travel has always been my great luxury, and I have always wanted to keep the most beautiful images of it. Yet in each new destination, the same question returned: whom to trust with those moments? Finding an exceptional photographer far from home takes time, all the more when you do not speak the language.

Riva was born from that conviction. We work only with the finest photographers in each destination, chosen for the quality of their eye and the rigour of their service: punctual on the day, faithful to every date we promise. You write to us, and everything else is taken care of. On the French Riviera as in Courchevel, the same standard of excellence.
