New Year's Eve on the French Riviera

New Year on the Côte d'Azur splits neatly in two: Monaco, which does the fireworks, and everywhere else, which does dinner. Knowing which of those you want before you book is most of the planning, because the coast is small, the roads are slow that night and the last train leaves earlier than the party finishes. Here is how the night actually works, town by town.

Where do you go for New Year's Eve on the French Riviera?

Monaco for the fireworks and a free public celebration on Port Hercule, Nice for the biggest crowd and the widest choice of restaurants, Cannes for a quieter and more expensive version of the same, and Saint-Tropez for almost nothing at all, since much of the village is closed between November and Easter. If you want a picture of midnight, go to Monaco. If you want a table, stay in Nice.

How does the Monaco night work?

It is free, it is outdoors and it is on the harbour. The Christmas village on Port Hercule stays open through the evening with stages and food chalets, the crowd builds along the quays through the night, and the fireworks are fired at midnight over the water. You do not need a ticket, a table or a plan more elaborate than arriving early enough to stand somewhere with a view.

Two practical notes. The quays fill well before midnight, so a good position is a matter of arriving at eleven rather than at five to twelve. And Casino Square is the other pole of the night, dressed and lit, with a different crowd and a stricter dress code.

What about getting home?

This is the part that goes wrong. The coastal railway runs a special service on some New Year nights and a normal one on others, taxis are effectively unbookable between midnight and two, and the road out of Monaco is slow. Decide before dinner how you are getting back, and check the current timetable on the regional operator's site rather than assuming.

If you are staying in Nice and going to Monaco for midnight, treat the return as the constraint that shapes the evening. If you are staying in Monaco, everything is walkable and the problem disappears.

Is New Year a good time to be here?

It is the one expensive fortnight of the Riviera winter, and it is worth it if you want a party rather than a rest. Christmas and New Year is the only period between November and March when hotel rates rise, restaurants require booking weeks ahead and the coast feels busy. Everything either side of it, the first half of December and the whole of January, is the cheapest and quietest the coast ever gets.

For photographs, the useful thing about the period is the decoration: the Christmas villages in Nice and Monaco, the lights along the Promenade and the Croisette, and an afternoon sun low enough to shoot from two o'clock onwards. Is Saint-Tropez open at New Year?

Barely. Much of the village and most beach clubs close from around November to Easter, and the handful of places that stay open do so on reduced days. Saint-Tropez in December is a beautiful empty village with very few services, which is a good thing for a quiet walk and a bad basis for a New Year's Eve. Nice, Monaco and Cannes are the three towns that genuinely function that night.
