They arrive on an August Saturday at noon, not knowing there is no railway station, that the Place des Lices is a market that morning, that the harbour faces into backlight all morning, and that a professional shoot on public land means a file at the town hall with an official fee schedule. Here is what to know before booking, whichever photographer you choose.

What does a photographer in Saint-Tropez cost in 2026?

The travel question is not a detail here. A photographer based in Nice counts 90 km and two hours of road on a summer Friday to work for one hour. Always ask whether travel is included in the figure quoted, and ask in writing.

Do you need a permit to photograph in Saint-Tropez?

Yes for any professional shoot on public land, with a file to submit at least seven days ahead and a daily fee. This is the Saint-Tropez particularity almost nobody plans for: where other towns on the coast tolerate a discreet couple session, Saint-Tropez publishes an official schedule of public highway fees.

The town requires an online form plus three documents, a public liability insurance certificate, bank details and a company registration extract, sent to the Pôle Attractivité. An incomplete file is returned to the applicant. For feature films and large photographic shoots the town asks for a longer lead time and a meeting at the town hall.

2023 schedule, the latest fee document published by the town of Saint-Tropez, consulted in August 2026; applications now go through the Pôle Attractivité - évènementiel. If your shoot is both photo and video, the video rates apply. A specific agreement may be drawn up for a large production. Confirm the current amount with the town hall before budgeting.

Two practical consequences. First, a photographer who assures you no permit is ever needed for a public shoot in Saint-Tropez either is not properly registered or does not work here. Second, the Commission du Film du Var assists with these applications free of charge, scouting included: a local professional knows what gets declared and what does not.

The name « Saint-Tropez » is a registered trademark, and it can concern you

The town has registered the names « Saint-Tropez » and « Saint-Trop' » as trademarks. The municipal notice is explicit: selling any garment or object bearing the name, or using it in a film title, a music video or a song, requires a formal application to the commune and may be the subject of a separate contract. The town also asks that any credit be written in full, « Ville de Saint-Tropez » and not « ST-TROPEZ ».

For a couple shooting holiday pictures, none of this matters. For a brand shooting a collection, a hotel producing a film, or a label planning to put the village name on a product, it is a line to settle before production rather than after. It is also a real difference from Nice, Cannes or Antibes, where the question does not arise in these terms.

Where should you photograph in Saint-Tropez, and when?

The village photographs well twice a day and badly the rest of the time. The harbour faces north-west: it sits in backlight for part of the morning and comes alive late in the afternoon, when the light rakes across the ochre facades of the Quai Jean-Jaurès. The lanes of La Ponche, by contrast, hold all day because they live on indirect light.

Two calendar traps, both confirmed by the town. Place des Lices holds a market every Tuesday and Saturday morning, which makes it unusable for a session. And the commune itself warns that Easter, July and August make circulation very difficult for cars and pedestrians alike: in those weeks you shoot before 10am or after 6pm, never in between.

How do you get to Saint-Tropez?

There is no railway station in Saint-Tropez, and that is the first detail that derails a badly planned day. According to the town's transport page, the nearest SNCF station is Saint-Raphaël, 37 km away, then Toulon at 69 km. By air, Nice airport is 91 km away, Toulon-Hyères 49 km, and La Môle aerodrome 15 km.

In high season the best way in remains the sea shuttle from Sainte-Maxime or Port-Grimaud: it drops you at the harbour, which is to say inside the setting, with no parking to find. It also happens to be the prettiest possible arrival for a first photograph.

When is the best time to come?

Late May to mid-June, and above all mid-September to mid-October. Both windows offer the same thing: sea still warm, venues still open, a village still alive, without the crowds and traffic the town hall itself flags for Easter, July and August.

Late September has one extra argument, Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez, a week when the gulf fills with classic rigs and the harbour becomes the finest setting in the Mediterranean. It is also the most expensive week of the autumn for accommodation: decide on what you came for.
