The Nice Jazz Fest: dates, stages, and what is free around it

Nice staged the first international jazz festival ever held, in 1948, with Louis Armstrong on the bill. The modern event, now called the Nice Jazz Fest, runs at the end of July in gardens two minutes from the sea, and it is one of the few large summer events on this coast that does not require a car, a boat or a reservation made in March. Louis Armstrong played the first edition in 1948. Eight decades later it still occupies the same few hundred metres of central Nice, which makes it unusually easy to build a whole day around rather than just an evening. Note that the festival paused for more than twenty years after that first edition, which is why Juan-les-Pins, running continuously since 1960, holds the European longevity record.

When is the Nice Jazz Festival and where does it take place?

Three days at the end of July, 23 to 25 July in 2026 and four days in 2025, on two stages in the centre of the city: the Scène Masséna on the square and the Théâtre de Verdure in the Jardin Albert 1er, between the old town and the Promenade des Anglais. The programme has been broader than jazz for years: expect soul, funk, hip hop and electronic acts alongside the jazz proper, which is what fills the gardens. Concerts run from late afternoon into the night, with two stages alternating so there is almost always something playing.

The line-up is announced in spring and tickets go on sale immediately. Single evening tickets and multi-day passes both exist, and the evenings with the largest headline names sell out first.

Is there anything to see without a ticket?

Yes, and it is one of the better parts of the week. The festival programmes free stages and off-programme sets around the centre, and the streets of Vieux Nice fill with musicians for the duration whether or not they are on the official bill. You will hear music walking between Place Masséna and the Cours Saleya any evening of the festival without paying anything. The paid programme is where the headline acts are, but the town itself is playing.

The other free element is geography. The Jardin Albert 1er is bordered by public paths, so the sound carries well beyond the fence, and the square in front of it stays busy all evening.

Where do you stay, and how do you move around?

Anywhere within walking distance of Place Masséna, and on foot. This is the rare Riviera event where staying in the centre is both possible and correct: the venue is central, the old town is next to it, the beach is across the road, and the tram covers everything else. Nice in mid July is expensive but not sold out the way Cannes is in May, and rooms in the streets behind the Promenade or in the Carré d'Or are usually findable a few weeks ahead.

If you are coming from elsewhere on the coast, the coastal train is the answer: Antibes is around twenty five minutes, Monaco around twenty, Cannes around forty. Last trains back run late but not all night, so check the return before committing to a full evening. And the airport is fifteen minutes from Masséna by tram line 2, which is the single most useful piece of transport information in Nice.

What else is happening in Nice that month?

Late July is the fullest stretch of the Nice year. One thing worth knowing if you are also here on 14 July: Nice no longer fires fireworks that evening. Since 2016 the city holds a commemoration on the Promenade, with 86 beams of light for the victims of the attack, joined by a drone show for the tenth anniversary in 2026. The city's big fireworks night is the burning of the King at the end of the February carnival instead. The Cours Saleya flower market runs every morning except Monday, and the sea is at its warmest from mid July onwards.
