The Monaco Yacht Show: what a ticket buys, and what you can see for free

We work show week in Port Hercule every September, and first-time visitors get the same thing wrong: they buy a ticket expecting to go on board. For four days at the end of September this harbour holds around a hundred and twenty superyachts, which no other show matches, and the quays are as far as a standard ticket takes you. There is no official minimum size, but in practice nothing under about twenty four metres is in the show, the buyers number a few hundred people worldwide, and the price of a ticket reflects both facts. But the harbour is a harbour, the town is built vertically above it, and a lot of that week is visible from public ground.

When is the Monaco Yacht Show and what is on display?

Four days in late September, in Port Hercule, the main harbour of Monaco. The fleet is roughly a hundred and twenty superyachts, from 23.98 to 102 metres in 2026, a large share of them presented for sale or charter, with the newest launches of the year making their debut. Around them are the shipyards, brokers, designers, and the suppliers of everything that goes on a yacht, from tenders to submersibles.

The important thing a first time visitor should know: a standard ticket does not get you on board. The organiser's own wording is that onboard visits are at the discretion of the exhibiting shipyards and brokers, which in practice means appointments for people in the market. What a ticket does buy is the ability to walk the quays among the fleet, which is a remarkable thing to do, and access to the stands and the tender displays.

Where can you see the yachts for free?

The Rocher does most of the work. The Rocher, the old town on the rock, looks straight down onto Port Hercule: from the terrace by the palace and the walk along the ramparts you see the entire fleet laid out at once, which is a better overview than anything available at quay level. The Avenue d'Ostende, the road that climbs from the port towards the casino, runs above the show perimeter for much of its length. And the Quai des États-Unis end and the roads towards the Larvotto give you the yachts anchored outside the harbour, since the fleet overflows the port every year.

The single best free hour is early morning, before the show opens. The harbour is lit from the east, crews are washing down decks, the water is flat, and there is nobody in the way. If you want one photograph of the week, take it then.

What is Monaco like that week?

Full, formal and expensive. Hotels in the principality and along the coast towards Nice book out, restaurant tables in Monaco need reserving days ahead, and the dress code across the town shifts noticeably: this is a business week and the industry dresses for it. Evening is when the money moves, on deck receptions and in the hotel bars, and almost all of it is private.

Practically: come by train, because Monaco parking during the show is close to unavailable and the roads around the port are congested from mid morning. Nice is around twenty minutes away, Menton fifteen. And walk with the lifts rather than against the hill, since Monaco is vertical and the public lift network connects the levels for free.

What is the week worth for photography?

It is the densest week of the Riviera calendar for anyone working on the water. Shipyards and brokers need images of a specific hull, on the water and against a recognisable Monaco backdrop, delivered fast enough to be useful during the show. And owners bring family and guests, which means the only time in the year that everyone connected to a boat is in the same place at the same time.

Two practical notes if you are organising this. Light in the harbour is only workable early and late, because the buildings that ring Port Hercule put the quays in shadow through the middle of the day and reflect hard light onto white hulls when they do not.
