A French Riviera honeymoon, planned properly

The French Riviera is one of the few honeymoon destinations where the hard part is not choosing what to do but choosing where to sit still. It is small, it is well connected, and almost every decision that ruins a trip here is made months in advance: too many towns, too little time, and a hotel in the wrong place. Here is how to plan it, from a studio that photographs couples on this coast every week and sees which weeks go well.

How long, and where to base yourself

Seven nights in two bases is the shape that works. One town on the water and one village above it, because the coast and the hills are two different holidays and the drive between them is short. Ten nights lets you add Saint-Tropez without rushing. Anything under five nights should be a single base, and if you are combining Paris with the Riviera, give the coast the larger half.

The hill villages are the other half of the answer. Eze sits on a rock above the sea with a view down the entire coast and is fifteen minutes from Villefranche. Saint-Paul-de-Vence is the art village, walled and steep, and is best in the early morning before the coaches. Neither is a full base for a week, but a night or two in one of them changes the trip.

When to go, month by month

Late May, June, September and the first half of October are the best weeks of the year here on every measure that matters, and they are not close. August is the month most Americans book and the month locals leave.

The four things to book before anything else

1. The hotel, six to nine months out for June and September. The good small properties in Eze, Cap-Ferrat and Saint-Paul-de-Vence have very few rooms and they go first.
2. One serious dinner per base, not five. Michelin level tables here book weeks ahead and dinner starts late by American standards, usually from 8pm. Two great meals across a week beat seven good ones.
3. A day on the water. A private boat for half a day is the single thing couples tell us afterwards they would repeat, and it is the one thing that cannot be improvised in July or August.
4. One hour of photographs, early in the trip. Not the last evening. More on why below.

Why the photographs go early in the trip

Two reasons, and one of them is weather. This coast gets windy days that arrive with little notice, and a session placed on day two of a honeymoon can be moved at no cost, while one placed on the final evening simply does not happen. The second reason is that couples look different at the start of a trip than at the end of one, and it shows.

An hour is enough. Three backdrops and two outfits fit comfortably into it and produce around 30 finished photographs, which for most couples is the only set of images of the two of them together from the entire honeymoon, since the alternative is asking strangers. If you want the session to cover a specific place, a terrace, a village at blue hour, a boat, say so when you book, because the route is planned around it.

Mistakes American couples make here

• Landing and driving the same day. The coastal corniches are narrow, beautiful and unforgiving, and jet lag plus a stick shift is a bad first afternoon. Take a transfer on day one.
• Renting a car for the whole week. Parking in Nice, Villefranche and Saint-Tropez is genuinely difficult and expensive. The coastal train covers most of it. Rent for the two days you need the hills, not for seven.
• Booking four towns in seven nights. Two bases. Every extra move costs you half a day and gains you almost nothing.
• Planning around lunch at noon and dinner at six. Kitchens here close between roughly 2pm and 7pm. Plan your day around that or you will eat badly.
• Saving the nicest outfits for the last night. Wear them on the night you have photographs, which should be early.

Rent a car for the two days you plan to spend in the hill villages, Eze, Saint-Paul-de-Vence, the Gorges du Verdon, and take a transfer from the airport on arrival day rather than driving the corniches with jet lag.
