If you are choosing between them, the decision comes down to a single question: do you want the proposal to be private, or do you want it to be recognisable?

Cap-Ferrat if privacy matters more than the postcard, Saint-Tropez if the place itself is part of the story. Cap-Ferrat gives you coastal paths where you can be genuinely alone at sunset, ten minutes from Nice. Saint-Tropez gives you the pastel port and the beaches everyone recognises, ninety minutes away and busy from June to September.

Why photographers push Cap-Ferrat

Because the whole exercise depends on not being interrupted, and Cap-Ferrat is the only place within half an hour of the airport where that is reliable. Pointe Saint-Hospice is reached by a ten minute walk that filters out casual visitors, the path bends often enough for a photographer to stay out of sight, and the sea sits on both sides of the peninsula so the light works whichever way you turn.

Why Saint-Tropez still wins for some couples

Because a proposal is a story you will tell for thirty years, and the setting is part of it. If Saint-Tropez means something to the two of you, if it is where you first came together or where the trip is based, no amount of tactical advice about traffic beats that. The village is also genuinely beautiful in a way photographs carry: the pastel port, the fishing boats, Plage des Graniers ten minutes from the centre.

The practical requirement is timing. In July and August the port at sunset is a crowd, so the workable version is either an early morning proposal, a beach outside the village, or an evening in May, June, September or October when the light is the same and the pressure is not. The questions that actually decide it

• Where are you staying? Proposing ninety minutes from your hotel means a car, a plan and a reason for the drive that does not give the game away.
• Does she want to be seen or not seen? Some people love a small crowd applauding. Others would be mortified. This is the whole decision and only one of you can answer it.
• What happens after? Dinner near the spot is easy in Saint-Tropez and requires a plan at Cap-Ferrat, where the restaurants are few and small.
• What month? Out of season, Saint-Tropez becomes private and Cap-Ferrat becomes quiet to the point of empty. In August the gap between them is at its widest.
