Where to have your bachelorette party on the French Riviera

Almost every bachelorette group that lands on this coast books Saint-Tropez first and works out the logistics afterwards. Half of them should have. The other half spent a third of their weekend on the one road onto the peninsula, and would have had a better trip an hour east. The five towns below are not interchangeable, they suit different groups, different budgets and different amounts of time, and the choice takes about two minutes once you know what each one actually costs you.

Where should you have a bachelorette party on the French Riviera?

Saint-Tropez if the group is small, the budget is real and you have at least two nights. Nice if you are eight people flying in from four different cities, because everything is walkable and the airport is ten minutes away. Cannes if you want the glamour without the drive. Monaco for one night, not a weekend. Antibes and Juan-les-Pins if you want the beach and the nightlife in the same place without Saint-Tropez prices.

Why is Saint-Tropez the default choice, and when is it the wrong one?

It is the default because it is the most photogenic village on this coast and everyone knows the name. The pastel facades of the old port, the lanes behind them and the pine light on the way to Pampelonne are why the pictures from here look the way they do, and no other town on the Riviera gives you that.

It is the wrong call when the group has one night or arrives late. There is a single road onto the peninsula, and in high season it does not move. A group flying in on Friday evening and out on Sunday afternoon will spend a real fraction of the weekend in a car. Two workarounds exist and both are worth knowing: stay in Sainte-Maxime, across the bay, and take the shuttle, which crosses in fifteen minutes, or come outside July and August, when the same drive is simply a drive.

The beach clubs on Pampelonne are also seasonal. They are built to be taken down and they close outside the season, so a March bachelorette in Saint-Tropez is a village weekend, not a beach club weekend. Check the dates of the specific club before anyone books flights.

Why does Nice work better than people expect?

Because it removes every logistical problem a group of eight creates. People arrive from different cities at different hours, and the airport is ten minutes from the old town instead of ninety. Nobody needs a car. Dinner, drinks, the seafront and the morning after are inside one walk, and the coastal train puts Antibes, Cannes and Monaco within an easy day trip if you want a change of scene.

What you give up is atmosphere. Nice is a city of several hundred thousand people with traffic and buses, and it never feels like a private holiday. For a group that wants one memorable weekend without spending it organising each other, that is usually a fair trade.

Is a night in Monaco worth it?

One night, yes. A weekend, rarely, because the whole country is smaller than most city districts and a group works through it in a day. The reason to go is the Casino de Monte-Carlo, and it has real rules that catch groups out at the door, so here they are before someone books a table.

When should you go?

June and September, in that order. June gives you the longest evenings of the year, with sunset past 9pm and golden hour running until the light goes, so a session at 8pm still leaves the whole night ahead. September keeps the warm sea and loses most of the crowds. July and August are the loudest, the most expensive and the hardest to move around in, and December leaves you with sunset around 5pm, which changes the shape of the whole day.

How do you get group photographs everyone actually keeps?

Book one hour, early in the weekend, at golden hour, and treat it as an event rather than a favour asked of whoever has the best phone. Four things decide the result.

• One hour, not three. Three backdrops and two outfits fit comfortably inside an hour and produce around thirty edited photographs. Beyond that a group stops cooperating, and it shows in every frame.
• Before the night, not during it. Photographs taken at 8pm in a group that is dressed and rested look nothing like photographs taken at 1am. Book the session as the start of the evening.
• Somewhere you are allowed to be. Public streets are fine. Beach clubs, hotel terraces and private boats are private property and the answer depends on the manager, so ask when you book the table, not when the photographer arrives. Monaco is stricter than France and its permit service asks for fifteen days notice.
• Decide who the photographs are for. A set for the bride and a set for everyone's feed are two different sessions. Say which one you want and the hour is planned differently.
