In short
Ramatuelle and Gassin are the hill villages behind Saint-Tropez, above Pampelonne. Gassin, at 200 m, is one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France and looks over the whole gulf. The best spots are the village lanes, the vineyards below and the Moulins de Paillas on the ridge between them, which are free to visit outside and ideal at sunset.
Ramatuelle and Gassin are the two hill villages just behind Saint-Tropez, above the beaches of Pampelonne. They are where the peninsula looks most Provençal: stone houses, vineyards, pines and wide views over the gulf.
Here is how to use them for a session away from the port.

Why leave Saint-Tropez for the villages?
For calm, space and the view. In summer the port is full and every frame has a crowd. Ten minutes uphill, the villages are quiet, and the light falls across vineyards and hills instead of yachts.
Where are the best photo spots?
- Gassin's lanes and terraces, which look over the gulf, the Maures and, on clear days, the Alps. The village claims one of the narrowest streets in the world.
- Ramatuelle's stone lanes, which wind around the hilltop.
- The Moulins de Paillas, on the ridge between the two, with views on both sides.
- The vineyards below the villages, for golden summer evenings.
Is it a good place to propose?
Yes: the Paillas windmills at sunset are one of the best proposal spots on the peninsula. The ridge is open, quiet in the evening and looks over the whole gulf. Our guide to the best places to propose in Saint-Tropez lists the others.
How do you get there?
By car or driver: Ramatuelle is about 10 km from Saint-Tropez. Parking is limited in the villages in summer, so a driver makes the evening easier. Pair it with sunrise at Pampelonne: see our sunrise photoshoot guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is Gassin one of the most beautiful villages in France?
Yes. Gassin is listed among the Plus Beaux Villages de France. It sits at about 200 m above the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, with views over the gulf, the Maures hills and, on clear days, the Alps.
Can you visit the Moulins de Paillas for free?
Yes, the outdoor area around the windmills is free. One mill was rebuilt and can be visited on short tours. The ridge looks over the gulf on one side and the hills on the other.
